Tips for CVs and building your LinkedIn profile

Part I: Curriculum Vitae:

 

What’s the goal of CVs?

CV is your identity, and the first key to open the door for the relevant position and company which you’ve targeted.
Thus, your CV should be summarized, clean and relevant to the specific company/position that you applied to.

Your CV should have the following details, preferably in that order:

·        Full-name

·        The position you’re looking for

·        Your contact Info: Email and Phone number

·        Your geographic location(this may vary according to where you live and where you want to work, so you might state that you currently live in Jerusalem and looking for positions in Tel-Aviv and the center).

·        Links: Add links to you LinkedIn, Github, Stackoverflow etc.

·        Skills, tech and soft:A short summary of all your relevant skills, technologies and technical experience.

·        Job experience/Leading and managing experience/Soft-Skills and personal qualifications.

·        MORE FOR JUNIORS: Education– Juniors, Including the subject, technical information

·        MORE FOR SENIORS: Real experience, describing past positions and companies, add any voluntary experience also.

·        Projects and links(If available)

·        Volunteering, if you have any experience in voluntary causes, add it.

·        Languages: Languages - English/Hebrew/ Russian  and Levels –native/ fluent/ basic communication skills.

Pay attention:

·        Your personal details should be in the body of your CV (not in “header” or “footer”, because that there are some programs that scan your CV and might miss it if you keep them to the top.

·        Describe all your technical skills, DBs OS things you’re comfortable with by expertise level. Put everything you can! Don’t let them guess those skills and this knowledge.

·        Work history: POSITION –TIME – COMPANY NAME – DESCRIPTION

·        Format: recommended to sendin PDF (looks good on most devices and CRM programs are adapted best for this).[Notice that there’s a doubt in which CRM program the HR in the targeted company uses, thus we recommend sending it as a PDF]

·        CVs should be in English(very relevant to RTL languages such as Hebrew), if you send CVs to gov site sand such, maybe native language is preferred but the rule of thumb should be English here.

Seniors:

How would you show the emphasis your experience as seniors? What would the companies expect to see from your CV?

·        Skills, Have you been a special functioning unit there? What’s the size of the company and such, % of hands-on.

·        Personal development, show that you’ve started somewhere and developed in that direction, or if it’s team leading they’d want to see that you actually led a team, amount of people you've led, what type of team? Who was your boss (title) and who was under you(titles)?

*This is your place to emphasis your LinkedIn information (who worked with you) so that they can give the feedback on your leadership.

·        Explain how you’ve led difficult process in the company, how you’ve managed doing what you did and how you did it.

Don’t leave any room for doubt! 😊

Juniors:

You don’t have enough experience or non at all, what should you put your emphasis on?

Even though it seems like you have no experience and nothing to show, this is NOT true!

Your CV is the part where you should show all your interest and knowledge, everything that you’ve done in the relevant field.

For instant, If your experience is less hands-on with product development, but more with project you’ve done – put it on your cv!

If you “live and breath”, spending your free time on everything you really liked doing, put it on your cv, as detailed as possible on the technical level - Fields, tech languages, DB, OS and etc.

Write the subjects such as Mobile/Web/UX/UI/Fullstack/Backend/design/ML/Computer Vision and go specific as much as you can. For example, Deep learning with Python using PyTorch.

Be as creative as you can to show it, this is your strength here!

 

PROBLEMS CONCERNING NOT DECIDING A SPECIFIC FIELD:

First of all, you should understand exactly what you’re looking for.

This is very important because, if you’re hesitating on what position and field you’re interested in, the recruiter will see that also, and they are looking to hire someone to a very specific position which makes them less interested in you if you’re hesitant! Show how you’re connected to this field.

Think of the courses you liked the most, why did you chose this subject for your big project.

 

Another possible solution would be creating a few CVs with each targeting a different field and sending the one that matches the position you're applying for.


A better solution isactually to decide which position and field are interest you the most, and putall the efforts there. Don’t be afraid of choosing! It’s actually increasesyour chance of success.
